What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the science of life that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The word Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit, where “Ayu” means life and “Veda” means knowledge. Ayurveda is therefore literally translated to mean science of life or knowledge of longevity.

Good health as per Ayurveda can be achieved through balance between mind, body, spirit, and the environment around us. This balance, or harmony, is achieved through diet, physical exercise and lifestyle modification and various herbs, as per the person’s unique body constitution called ‘Prakruti’ and the state of three physiological forces (read humors) at a particular time.

The central concept of Ayurvedic medicine is the theory that health exists when there is a balance between three fundamental bodily humors or doshas called Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

  • Vata is the impulse principle necessary to mobilize the function of the nervous system
  • Pitta is the energy principle which uses bile to direct digestion and hence metabolism into the venous system.
  • Kapha is the body fluid principle which relates to mucous, lubrication and the carrier of nutrients into the arterial system.

These humors are in adynamic equilibrium in the body and are influenced by the age, diet and lifestyle of a person and the person’s interaction with the environment.

Ayurveda gives elaborate description of the dietary regimens, lifestyle (seasonal and daily regimen) regimens and herbs to be used by a particular individual as per one’s unique body constitution (Prakruti) and the state of the above mentioned humors. These principles form the basis of ayurvedic therapeutics and its unique ability to provide prevention of diseases and to increase vitality, longevity and delaying the ageing process. In short, Ayurveda insists a person to eat right according to one’s body type as per ayurvedic constitution.
