Original Sanskrit verse from the Sushruta Samhita (600 B.C.) (Rasa (Digestive juice/chyle) is responsible for either obese or slim body. Six types of Rasa's are described in the Ayurveda.

A person who consumes Kaphaz diet (heavy, oily or fatty food such as meat, fish poultry and sweets), over eating, excessive sleeping and lack of exercise will lead to the development of 'Ama'(non-pathogenic abdominal disturbances) of sweet taste is produced in the body and develops obesity. This 'Amarasa' is more sticky (i.e., oily) in nature, which creates obesity.
Short breath, thirst, hunger, sleep, sweating, foul odor from the body, tiredness and unclear voice are characteristics of obesity. This patient will not be able to discharge his routine systematic work due to delicate system Medha or adipose tissue/ hyperlipidemia and kapha blocks the channels that supply the reproductive tissue or the reproductive system (sukravahasrotas) as a result he will develop impotence. He will be less immune due to the obstruction of other systems (srotas). Important diseases that occur in obese persons are pramehapeedika (carbuncle, diabetic foot ulcers), fever, fistula, tumors and other types of neurological disorders. They may die by one of the above mentioned diseases. In obese people all diseases are complicated. Disease symptoms are seen before the channels are blocked and hence, those who has the tendency to become hyperlipidemic, have to give up the consumption of hyperlipidemic diet and regularise their other habits.

For the treatment of obesity, Sushrutha stated that guggulu, shilajit, triphala, (containing equal amount of fruit powders of Terminalaia chebula, T. bellerica and Emblica officinalis), Lohabhasma (purified and micronized iron as per ayurvedic system), Rasayan (particular ayurvedic preparations) honey, barley, green gram, millets, etc., have to be included in the diet, which are responsible for reducing fat. Physical exercise should be practiced daily.)

Cholesterol buildup in the coronary arteries leads to the condition known as Hridaya roga in Ayurveda, which literally means heart disease.
This is similar to atherosclerosis. When the cholesterol collects in the arteries leading to the heart, their lumen becomes narrow and the amount of blood entering the heart is insufficient. Due to this the heart needs to pump harder, causing several kinds of cardiovascular diseases, the worst of which is the fatal angina pectoris.

Cholesterol is present in fatty acids. Some cholesterol is needed for the proper utilization of foods in the body, formation of the hormones and the bile, etc. This is known as the high-density cholesterol, or simply, the useful cholesterol. The rest of the cholesterol simply builds up in the arteries without any apparent function. This is the low-density cholesterol, or the bad cholesterol.

The buildup of cholesterol can be reduced by several Ayurvedic treatments. Cholesterol reduction means safety from the various cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading causes of deaths in the world today

Some ayurvedic herbs research data
The resin of the Commiphora mukul tree has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 2000 years to treat a variety of ailments. Studies in both animal models and humans have shown that this resin, termed gum guggul, can decrease elevated lipid levels. The stereoisomers E- and Z-guggulsterone have been identified as the active agents in this resin. Recent studies have shown that these compounds are antagonist ligands for the bile acid receptor farnesoid X receptor (FXR), which is an important regulator of cholesterol homeostasis. It is likely that this effect accounts for the hypolipidemic activity of these phytosteroids.
which is actually a mix of ketonic steroids extracted from the gum oleoresin of the commiphora mukul, this substance has been the traditional and age old approved treatment for hyperlipidemia in ayurveda. The treatment of high triglyceride levels in the body have been shown to be effective using guggul as an herbal medication, this is borne out by the fact that the level of serum triglycerides fell by 30.3% during one particular trial.
A dosage level of 25 mg per day is the typical recommended amount of the guggul-sterones during the treatment of the individual with a high triglyceride level within the bloodstream. About 5-10% of guggul-sterones per supplement is the normal dosage in the extracts used during supplementation. To lower the level of triglycerides, prolonged used of guggul may be undertaken, though it is important to monitor the effect of guggul on the TGs for a period lasting from 3 to 4 months at a time.
Garlic is another supplement that can help in the reduction of triglycerides in the blood l. The supplemental level of garlic during these trials was about 600-900 mg of garlic per day steam distilled garlic "oil" which has no proven effectiveness against these conditions. Therefore as far as lowering the elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the body is concerned and partially based on these secondary findings the utilization of garlic as a supplement shouldn't be the primary approach during any treatment regimen.
People with elevated levels of triglycerides and bad cholesterol (LDL) can also be carried out through supplementation with the herb known as the fenugreek, this reduction in the levels of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol was achieved in individuals with high lipid levels during preliminary trials where bread made using 50 grams of fat free powder of fenugreek was consumed two times every day by the test subjects as a supplement. In diabetics and other individuals with elevated levels of different lipids half the amount of fenugreek was sufficient to bring about a reduction in the levels of lipids and cholesterol including triglycerides. The regular and daily utilization of fenugreek seeds during a small and randomized trial established similar results, this trial utilized 100 g of fenugreek seeds as a single dose during the study. In addition to these results, high or elevated triglyceride levels were reduced over a 20 day. where 25 grams to 50 grams of fat free powder of fenugreek seed per day was utilized as supplement. Fenugreek utilization has its downside, in that symptoms during the first days of initial use of the powder can bring about problems such as mild diarrhea and will lead to the production of gas, in general these symptoms tend to disappear as the patient slowly adapts to the fenugreek powder.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Cholesterol

  • Alfalfa (Medicago satina) Alfalfa is effective in treating problems of the arteries. It helps in clearing arteries congested with cholesterol.
  • Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) Arjuna has been used since centuries in the treatment of heart related problems such as heart attacks. The bark of the arjuna when taken in powder form has beneficial properties. This can dissolve the cholesterol that accumulates in the coronary artery and reduce the possibility of heart attacks.
  • Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) Coriander is a very good diuretic. It makes the kidneys perform their functions of excretion better. Therefore the kidneys flush out the excess unneeded cholesterols from the body.
  • Garlic (Allium cepa) Garlic is very beneficial to people with cholesterol problems that affect the heart. Eating two to three cloves of garlic a day helps to reduce or even completely eliminate the harmful cholesterol in the blood. Garlic can disintegrate the blood cholesterol and hence free up the arteries.
  • Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) This is a traditional Indian herb which has become very popular in the Ayurvedic treatment of cholesterol-related heart problems. It contains guggulsterones which have been proven to reduce the levels of cholesterol on regular use. 25 mg of these guggulsterones are prescribed for intake thrice a day.
  • Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) Holy basil has the capacity to dissolve the accumulated cholesterol from the arteries into the person's bloodstream. From here they are eliminated by the kidneys.

Have cold hipbaths twice daily. These have been shown to have positive effects in the reduction of cholesterol when taken on a regular basis. A simple remedy is to have a single piece of garlic every morning. This takes time to show results, but the results are positive. Consume some almonds and walnuts on a daily basis.
