| Diet Tips For Travellers |

Traveling long distances often entails long hours of sitting in seats and transit lounges. People often pass the time on long trips by pigging out on unhealthy snacks. So, it may be the time to reconsider what you eat so that you can take a healthy lifestyle along. It's important to watch your diet, fluid intake and nutrition while traveling and also during your stay outside home so as to keep the discomfort to a minimum.
Achieving all your nutritional goals is possible provided you are organized, plan ahead, and leave very little to chance.
Nutritional strategies necessary to overcome many of the eating challenges you may face when traveling both locally and internationally are:
- If you are dining at the hotel, try to eat fruit and non-sugared cereal with a boiled egg. Carb-laden breakfast treats, while tasty, aren't your friend.
- Select whole wheat bread for sandwiches.
- You can find healthy options amid the burgers and fried nuggets. Look for words like "grilled" and order all sandwiches without mayo, cheese or special sauces.
- Make your own healthy sub by asking for more tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce or olives.
- Order salads with vinaigrette dressings on the side, and avoid fatty toppings like cheese, croutons and those tasty fried noodles.
- Take freshly cut vegetables for munching and fresh fruit for dessert and snacking.
- If you can choose where to eat, steer your dinner party toward Japanese over Chinese and Pizza instead of Mexican.
- Opt for the plainest chicken or fish dish on the menu, avoid buttery sauces, and ask for extra broccoli or veggie medley instead of fries or a potato.
- Dressings and toppings can pack on the calories, so be sure to choose light dressings (on the side), grilled chicken or fish protein and filling ingredients like beans, broccoli, zucchini and avocado.
- While traveling, drink as much water, lemon water, coconut water and fruit juice as possible and, if necessary, take your own bottle of water along. By keeping your water balance positive you won’t feel tired and irritable. Drinking alcohol and tea or coffee contributes to dehydration and will make you feel groggy and parched.
- If you ever experience traveler’s diarrhea consume a bland diet of dry toast, crackers, biscuits, bananas and avoid alcohol, dairy and fatty foods.
- Be aware of food hygiene standards.
